Mick Fanning warms up in wool for the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach

3 April 2013

Rip Curl has partnered with The Woolmark Company to produce a selection of Woolmark-certified Mick Fanning Merino wool garments which debuted at the Rip Curl Pro ASP World Championship Tour at Australia’s iconic Bells Beach at the Easter Weekend.

The development follows on from the successful launch of the MF1 boardshort and came on the eve of a global release of the high-class “Mick Fanning by Rip Curl” clothing range.

Headlining the collection is a Woolmark-certified Merino wool “wetsuit poncho” which was supplied to all ASP world tour competitors.

The poncho has been designed to be worn as an over garment, providing warmth and insulation between heats or when changing in and out of wetsuits.

It was a personal gift from Mick Fanning to his fellow competitors on the ASP world tour.

“I wanted to give my peers something that they could remember their time at Bells by,” said the twice world champion. “The Rip Curl Pro is such an important contest and ringing the Bell can make a pro career.

“The poncho is something that both the guys and the girls can use so everyone will be covered. Like the rest of my range the materials are premium and I couldn’t think of anything finer than 100 per cent Merino wool for that. It is natural fibre versus the natural elements of Victoria’s Bells Beach. It’s made for surfing on the edge of the world.”

While the poncho remains exclusive to the pros, Fanning wanted something else more suited to and available for the fans. So Rip Curl created the “MF Ram Series” jacket and fleece. Both pieces are made from Merino wool, are Woolmark certified and will be available in Limited Edition quantities at ripcurl.com

The “MF Ram Series” jacket and fleece are Fanning’s “go to garments” when he needs something truly special in cool conditions – unique pieces for sharp style and comfort while on the road. Merino wool remains dry and comfortable in the elements, but is also breathable, odour resistant and has temperature regulation qualities.

“I’m stoked about the collaboration on these jackets,” said Fanning. “When we started on a personalised range, I really wanted the clothes to be special and made for life on the road and Rip Curl’s understanding has helped us produce just that. Chiming in with The Woolmark Company Australia added another cool layer of quality. When you hear the words 100 per cent Merino and Woolmark certified, you know it’s something special.”

Merino wool and Rip Curl are a perfect match, according to The Woolmark Company CEO, Stuart McCullough.

“When Mick Fanning steps out of the Southern Ocean he has the ideal fibre to put on. The Rip Curl MF Ram Series is soft and warm and will wick moisture away from the body. The Merino, Mick Fanning and Rip Curl is a brilliant partnership and we’re very excited to be involved.”
