The Woolmark Company has reinforced its support for Milano Unica, with its engagement in the textile fair’s signature event ON Stage; and by doubling its presence inside the fair, attending Moda In as well as Ideabiella with the aim to reach more visitors and exhibitors.

Presenting partner of ON Stage since its establishment in 2009, The Woolmark Company is committed to educating and supporting emerging designers by inviting them to discover the quality and versatility of Merino wool.

Emerging designer Michael Lo Sordo is the first Australian designer to have been invited by the talent scouting project to present his collection at the event.

“It’s such an honour to have been selected to showcase and represent Australia for this year’s On Stage at Milano Unica,” explained Lo Sordo. “To be able to present our designs, manipulations and creations focusing on Merino wool is an absolute pleasure. I previewed my AW13 collection at the event which uses exquisite new marbling techniques to dye and characterise my wool so it’s an incredibly exciting opportunity, especially at this early stage in my career.”

Through ON Stage, The Woolmark Company confirms once again its support of young designers’ creativity, embodied in the International Woolmark Prize, the historic award that features Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent among its most famous past winners which re-launched in 2012 with great success.

At Milano Unica, The Woolmark Company will also be presenting The Wool Lab, the seasonal guide to the most inspiring trends and most interesting wool products. The Wool Lab, a permanent laboratory to source the best quality wool products worldwide and to identify the emerging trends in fashion, design, art, pop culture, music and other fields, introduces 9 inspirational themes for the next season.

Some of these themes are based on macro-trends, “long-waves” moving through fashion and lifestyle with enduring influence. Others are emerging new trends, reflecting the esprit du temps and the impending needs of the future market.

“Woolmark have been supporting the ON Stage project since 2009,” explains Stuart McCullough, Chief Executive Officer of The Woolmark Company. “We are pleased to see Australian talent being recognised globally, Michael has shown great ingenuity in his approach to working with wool, we wish him success during his time in Milan.”
